UK’s largest energy supplier ‘Zero Bills’ mission: Octopus Energy

‘Zero carbon, zero stress, zero bills’

Octopus energy are on a mission to create 100,000 ‘Zero Bill’ homes by 2030, in hopes of tackling the energy crisis and creating more affordable homes.

The UK’s largest energy supplier have got rid of all energy bills for homes in one part of the UK, expanding it’s ‘Zero Bills’ initiative into Scotland.

This ultimately means that Scottish residents can get access to new homes with no energy bills, guaranteed for at least 10 years.

Octopus Energy’s ‘Zero Bills’ initiative

In 2022, Octopus launched their ‘Zero Bills’ tariff, which gives customers the option to buy homes that come with green technology included and built in.

And in 2024, they kicked off their newest mission – to build 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030.

Their mission is to ‘make green living the easy, affordable option for everyone.’, innovating homes that are powered by green tech, including built-in: solar panels, heat pumps, and batteries.

Quoted on Renewable Energy Installer, Jim Bennett, Zero Bills Scotland Director at Octopus Energy, said:

With the New Build Heat Standard legislation in place, now is the perfect time to bring ‘Zero Bills’ to Scotland. This initiative not only eliminates energy bills but also offers homes equipped with cutting-edge green technology, ensuring sustainable, future-proof living for residents.

Octopus Energy’s initiative follow the New Build Heat Standard legislation, which requires new builds to install eco-friendly heating systems.

However, the energy providers have taken that legislation and taken a level up, with a mission of fully eliminating energy costs.

Energy partnerships to drive change

Octopus has partnered with Scottish organisations to help to establish their presence in the country. Partnerships include: MAST Architects and Homes for Scotland.

Octopus and MAST are working together to develop the ‘Zero Bills’ home designs, and the Homes for Scotland partnership is to help members integrate the initiative into new developments.

In the same article, Michael Jarvis, Director of MAST Architects, said:

Addressing fuel poverty and improving people’s livelihoods through energy-efficient homes is at the heart of our work. Collaborating with Octopus on Scotland’s first ‘Zero Bills’ homes will help eradicate energy costs and fuel poverty.

Octopus Energy has already completed over 1000 ‘Zero Bills’ homes, and now with Scotland on board the mission – green and bill-free housing is looking brighter and closer than ever before.
