New Housing Development to Regenerate a Town Centre
Gateshead Council has announced that it will regenerate its town centre and surrounding areas, through a brand-new housing development. How will this transform Gateshead and benefit the local community?
As part of a broader strategy to help regenerate Gateshead town centre, the housing development will be built on the site of the historic former Freight Depot railway sidings.
The homes will be available for both private and affordable rent
Delivered by the Gateshead Regeneration Partnership, with funding from Gateshead Council and Homes England, the development is said to be focusing on improving the quality and availability of housing in the area.
It will be located a 10-minute walk from Gateshead Quays and will feature 270 new two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes.
When completed the homes will be available for sale, for private rent, and offered for affordable rent too.
Delivering energy-efficient housing is the aim
Gateshead Council has stated that the homes will be “ideal for families and first-time buyers” and that the homes are aiming to boast modern living, in a centrally accessible location.
In addition to this, the development also benefits from being connected to Gateshead Council’s District Energy Heating Network, which provides low-carbon energy to homes at prices below market rate, utilising sustainable sources.
Councillor John Adams, Cabinet Member for Housing, explained that the focus of the development is to create a thriving community where people want to settle down.
The Councillor said: “I am thrilled with the progress being made on the Freight Depot development. We are dedicated to building new modern and energy-efficient housing in Gateshead that will not only help provide additional options for current residents but will hopefully encourage those from outside the area to consider Gateshead an ideal place to settle and raise a family.”
This will in turn boost the local economy, acting as the catalyst for further investment and growth in new homes and local busineses.
It is expected that the first homes will be completed in early 2024 and following this, the council has also committed to investing £168 million in its housing service over the next five years. This is aiming to deliver even more homes across the Gateshead area in the future.
Developments like this one highlight how essential it is to put the community first and create the thriving communities of the future.
